Zurich Viadukt Markt

by Alice Hertzog

Before heading over to Barranquilla the Swiss summer school participants met up at the Zurich Viadukt Market. This market is radically different from the Barranquilla market, and boasts an oyster bar, highly priced delis and a carefully curated atmosphere.

We used the opportunity to conduct a speed investigation – we tested some tools, sought to learn about the system, and wondered if any of our approaches could be used in Barranquilla. Markets in the Tropics will require us to be incredibly resourceful and develop fieldwork skills & tricks. This means being able to gather data about an urban area through direct observation, fuelled by our own curiosity and readiness to listen to residents, users, buyers and sellers – be them in Zurich or Colombia!

“The market’s linear form dictated by the structure of the bridge brings it closer to the form a boulevard than that of a market hall. Each arch forms an individual space used as boutique, restaurant, bar or gallery and only the first part near Limmatstrasse is a continuous space with stands or kiosks selling various products, approaching what is considered to be a market space. 2015-06-22 19.45.36

The viaduct is rather a formal example of a market, designed to offer high quality infrastructure such as power stations, internet, security systems, waste collection points, parking spaces and high quality space constructed with fine materials and an interesting architecture. Accordingly the products of the market are of a higher value not affordable for everyone.”

“Today the “Markthalle im Viadukt” is especially frequented by the residents of the adjacent neighbourhoods. But there are also some people from other parts of the city coming to explicitly buy specialities. And finally there is an increasing amount of tourists visiting in the Markthalle. Whereas the people from the neighbourhood are coming through the whole week, the tourists are especially important on the weekends. Generally, the peaks of customers are in the early afternoon and the early evening. The central and well served location in the up-and-coming district makes it easy for customers to reach the Market by public transport or by bike. Besides, along the viaduct there is an attractive walk- and bikeway leading directly to the Markthalle.”
